Founded in 1880 ... The band has been highly successful in competition throughout its history, becoming Champion Band of Wales, Welsh League Champions, Miner's Welfare Entertainments (CISWO) Champions and more ... Lewis-Merthyr has been equally successful on the concert stage, performing at a wide variety of locations across Wales and beyond ... ‘The 35 or so members of the choir are drawn from all ages and occupations: our youngest choristers are under 25 years old, our oldest over 70, and we have plumbers and electricians, company directors and managers, bus drivers, firemen, office workers and students, all united by a love of singing. We sing all kinds of music, from opera choruses and religious works via folk songs and jazz to pop songs and Musical Theatre, with most of our concerts including a vibrant selection from all these genres.’

Founded 1930: ‘The choir was originally one which only performed oratorios but over the years the choir’s repertoire has been increased considerably to include other major classical works as well as much lighter pieces and also music from the major musicals ... In addition to our own concerts, we occasionally take part in massed choir concerts ... New members are very welcome and there are no auditiions’.

PERFORMANCES

'We perform between 4 and 6 concerts annually in venues across Rhondda Cynon Taf, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. We have a wide-ranging repertoire, from classical through to 21st century, from the well-known and popular classics to the seldom-played and even first performances of new pieces. We like to perform with local young soloists, including winners of our Young Musician of the Valleys competition.'
