‘We organise instrumental and vocal tuition in most Camden schools as well as running 35 borough ensembles and choirs plus 2 Saturday music centres offering instrument hire and a scheme for parents to purchase new musical instruments without having to pay VAT ... Preparing and entering children for grade exams and Arts awards ... Providing musical advice to parents and support to teachers and schools.’
* Cecil Sharp House Featured
'A world-class dedicated folk arts centre, Cecil Sharp House is at the heart of English folk. With a unique history stretching back to 1930, the venue - owned and managed by the “English Folk Dance and Song Society” (EFDSS) - is a memorial to the folk music and dance collector Cecil Sharp. Vibrant and diverse, Cecil Sharp House exists to serve its wide and diverse audiences, engaging with art lovers (oft times folk art lovers) through unique and inspiring artistic events, and creative learning. The iconic Grade II listed building is home to EFDSS and the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library, England's national collection of folk music and dance.'
‘Annual event, hosted by FolkOnMonday, featuring the best of the national and local folk scene alongside workshops, sing around and more ... The London Folk Festival takes place in Camden at Cecil Sharp House, the heart of English Folk Music, and home of the English Folk Dance & Song Society.’ Held Early September.
‘A friendly, welcoming orchestra in North London ... Our standard is particularly suitable for intermediate players (grade 6 and above). No audition required - if you like us, we'll like you! Just turn up to any rehearsal and see how you get on, and/or come and meet up in the pub afterwards.’
'Founded in 1971, the Camden Choir enjoys an excellent reputation, with high standards and a distinctive repertoire. We perform three concerts a year (usually in Primrose Hill or Hampstead, but further afield on occasions), plus we sing Christmas Carols in aid of charity. We aim to combine mainstream works with more unusual and musically challenging pieces by a wide range of composers ... New members are always welcome: please go to our Join Us page. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LIVE IN CAMDEN.'
‘One of London's leading non-professional orchestras ... CSO seeks to combine the familiar staples of the classical and romantic repertoire with less well-known and more challenging works. Founded as Camden Chamber Orchestra, we rebranded as Camden Symphony Orchestra in 2013 to reflect the orchestra's size and repertoire. Consisting of around 60 regular players ... we perform three major orchestral concerts a year, as well as performing regularly with our friends at Islington Choral Society. While the orchestra takes its music making seriously, striving for ever higher standards, we also pride ourselves on our friendly, inclusive environment with a vibrant social scene.’
‘Formed in 1902 and quickly gained a reputation for excellence in performance and success in competition in England, Wales and Paris. Disrupted by the two World Wars, the Choir was re-established in 1961 and now has over one hundred members.’
‘Love to sing? Whatever your age or ability we have the choir for you!’ As well as the Community Choir (‘We have about 45 singers, of all ages and abilities, and no auditions‘), there is a Children’s Choir (‘For girls and boys, 4-11 years old’), and also the Primrose Singers (‘An entertaining and sociable twelve-voice vocal group who sing a terrific variety of music to a high standard’).
