'The Festival was first held in 1926, the year of the General Strike, which hardly augured well for its future! The hope was then expressed “that in time it would become one of the greatest musical events in this part of England” – could they have imagined that the two day event would achieve its present pre-eminence and still be growing eighty years later?' Founded 1957: ‘Over the years the Society has progressed from being a village choir to take its place as one of the three main choral societies of Cheltenham. The membership now stands at about 100 and the singers come from all over Cheltenham and the surrounding area. However we still remain proud of our roots in the village of Charlton Kings ... We sing popular choral classics, less frequently-heard works and contemporary commissions. Weekly rehearsals are enjoyable and rewarding ... Cheltenham’s professional orchestra, the Regency Sinfonia, usually accompanies our twice-yearly concerts’.

‘The Cheltenham Philharmonic Society was founded in 1895 “…for the purpose of bringing to the notice of the Cheltenham musical public, works which had not been performed in the town, or were but little known.” Cheltenham Philharmonic Orchestra concert programmes aim to stay true to this aim in combination with popular repertoire well known to our loyal audience ... New members, who can play to a good standard, are always welcome, subject to vacancies. There is no formal audition, but there is an informal assessment period of four weeks for you and us to decide whether we are suited.‘

‘A friendly and committed choir of women's voices ... always ready to welcome new members ... Starting as a small local WI choir in the village of Gotherington, with only 15-20 singers, some of whom had little musical knowledge, they now have about 35 singers from a wide area in and around Cheltenham ... The choir aim to give at least two concerts a year supporting local charities, one at Christmas and another in the Spring, but they are usually asked to do several more during the course of the year, which keeps them pretty busy. They often invite guest singers or instrumentalists to join them, and frequently include readings and fun items as well as the music.‘
