‘A choir of all ages and voices: what brings us together is an enjoyment of singing sacred and secular music from a range of composers, classical and modern. We aim to perform three times a year and choir rehearsals are focused on these performances. There is no audition, you will almost certainly be sitting beside people with more and less experience than you and we are led by a vastly experienced conductor and a wonderful accompanist ... The well-known Handelian scholar (and Lifeboat surgeon) Dr James S. Hall, his wife Cynthia Hall and Ernest Stride, then Keyboard Professor at the Royal Marines School of Music in Deal, were the joint founders of the Deal and Walmer Handelian Society in 1946. This followed a performance of Handel’s Solomon in Canterbury Cathedral, after which the three founders emerged saying that they could form a local choir that would do as well!’

Formed 2011. The Choir’s founder, Charles Spanner, ‘recognised that in the modern curriculum there is a lack of regular music activity for children, and so he created the Dover Community Youth Choir as a way of fulfilling a local need ... Singing is the most exacting exercise that the human body can do ... The choir are physically exercised and mentally exercised, especially when faced with new venues and audiences ... Members have raised self-esteem and confidence; they make new friends and have a sense of belonging to the community’.

‘The Choir is open to anyone who enjoys singing and has over 120 singers on its contact list. We perform three concerts a year in varying venues in East Kent. Our main concert is at the beginning of September so that people who want to keep singing through August can join us from other choral societies which do not rehearse then ... Our favourite venue is St Mary’s Arts Centre in Sandwich, which has plenty of space, excellent acoustics and good facilities. We warmly welcome new members, so if you are interested in singing with us, please get in touch.’

‘An amateur choir of 50 or so singers, founded in 1992 ... We are still based in Sandwich ... We sing a wide range of repertoire – from masses to songs from the shows, carols to jazz. Our singers have always had varying levels of skill – we practice hard but do not expect everyone to read music when they join. We have never auditioned a singer ... You do need to be able to sing tunefully and you will be expected to attend rehearsals regularly so that the choir can continue to develop excellence in its singing ... We have two major concerts each year and another event sometime in the Spring.’

Our Concert Band musicians are at least Grade 5 standard and comprise a number of music teachers and former professional musicians. Less experienced players perform with the Training Band which encourages and develops those playing at approximately Grades 1 or 2 upwards ... During the year the Band perform at around 4 or 5 concerts or events, including bandstands and outdoor concerts in the summer and a festive concert at Christmas.’

‘This Kent based brass band has its roots in the days when East Kent possessed three major working collieries with their almost obligatory brass bands. The collieries no longer exist but the bands, Snowdown and Betteshanger, continue as they always did ... The Snowdown Colliery Welfare Brass Band is entirely self supporting and performs at local fetes, fairs, bandstands, concerts and is an active contesting band.‘

Founded 2011: ‘We are a local group of enthusiastic singers, from the Shepherdswell area ... We greatly enjoy meeting together and singing for pleasure and fun! ... New singers from the local community are always welcome ... Remember: “Harmony is not unity: it is creating spaces for the variety of notes to find each other in producing something delightful…”‘

‘Formed in 2004 ... as part of a community link when St Edmund’s Catholic School, Dover became a Performing Arts Specialist school. The band is made up of over 60 ex-professional and competent players, and has been a tremendous training ground for students in the area to gain experience alongside more able players.’

www.dealbandstand.org

Deal Memorial Bandstand is a living Memorial to the 11 Royal Marines Musicians who were killed by a terrorist bomb on the 22nd September 1989 ... Concerts are performed on Sunday afternoons from May to September each year, commencing at 2.30pm.  We also hold a Carol Concert each December. The concerts are free of charge, as are the chairs, although we do hold a collection and sell raffle tickets to cover the costs of hiring the bands and towards the upkeep of the Bandstand.‘
