The oldest extant classical music festival in Wales. Set principally in the beautiful countryside of rural North Powys, the Festival features performances by the world's leading musicians in intimate historic locations.' Held Mid June.

‘The Gregynog Young Musician Competition was founded in 2005 and has become one of the most prestigious events of its kind. The competition is held annually at the highly acclaimed Gregynog Hall, which has a long history of association with music and the arts. Entrants must be aged 18 years and under and have reached Grade 8 standard or equivalent, on any orchestral instrument, brass band instrument or percussion.‘ Held Late April.

‘Promotes a series of up to six classical concerts each year. Each concert is held at Y Tabernacl located in the historic town of Machynlleth. Y Tabernacl is a favourite amongst professional musicians and has been described as “one of the most wonderful halls for chamber music in the world!” having marvellous acoustics. The venue is also used for recordings and live broadcasts by BBC Radio 3.’

‘Apart from the War years of 1939-1945, the Festival has been held every year since 1921 and has been conducted by many well-known and eminent conductors, including Sir Adrian Boult, Sir Malcolm Sargent, Sir John Barbirolli and Sir Charles Groves. The Festival Choir now consists of two affiliated choirs - Llanidloes Choral Society and Welshpool Choral Society - supplemented by individual singers from Machynlleth and surrounding areas ... The choirs rehearse separately in Llanidloes and Welshpool, with some rehearsals in Newtown.‘ Held Early May.

‘Established in 1942 during World War II by a group of well known Welshpool citizens ... Its main object was and still is that of fostering and promoting the education of the general public in the appreciation of music in all its forms. There are 5 concerts given during the season which runs from October to March, with an additional concert given by young local musicians each September.’

It has received grants from Powys County Council, The Arts Council and The National Lottery for the purchase of instruments, some of which are available for use by band members and others which are out with children in the local community who are learning to play. It is a member of TyCerdd, an organisation supporting music in Wales ... Nestling in the Dyfi valley, Machynlleth is the ancient capital of Wales and was the site of Owain Glyndwr’s Welsh Parliament in 1404’.

’Founded in 1951 – Originally known as the Cedewain Gleemen, it presently numbers some 41 choristers drawn from all walks of life, some from Newtown itself, but mostly from the surrounding communities ... The choir is fully dedicated to the encouragement of young singers and musicians in our area, and is actively engaged in providing platform time and the opportunity for youngsters to appear as soloists at selected concerts.‘
