‘Making music by yourself isn't half as much fun as singing with others. Come along to a practice or a concert and find out by seeing and hearing us and feel what we mean! We are always happy to welcome new folk whether very experienced or complete novices ... Men, women as well as young people can join us. Everyone is warmly welcomed and, next to hard practice, to achieve high musical standards, it’s all about the spirit of fun and enjoyment.’

‘A chamber choir of about 40 voices, based in Winchester, England ... Southern Voices prides itself on tackling a wide repertoire of works large and small, introducing both singers and audiences to little-heard pieces by well-known composers and new works by less familiar names. Concerts have become widely acclaimed as inspirational journeys of musical and emotional discovery ... The choir performs in a variety of venues across the region and is committed to undertaking charity performances whenever the increasing cost of staging concerts allows ... Our concerts each year, usually five or six in number, typically include a Christmas concert in the Chapel of St Cross and a Passiontide concert in the Cathedral.’

'Not since Thomas Beecham created his own international opera company in 1916, paid for with the proceeds from sales of Beecham’s Powders, has a new UK opera festival of such scale and ambition been born. It has quickly emerged phoenix-like to present world-class performance in the heart of Hampshire ...'

Formed 1974: ‘It has grown from around 30 members to its current size of about 80 ... We are a friendly SATB choir and are proud to be non-auditioned; nevertheless previous choral experience and an ability to read music are both invaluable ... We give two main concerts per year. The first, usually held in February or March, normally alternates on an annual basis between Twyford Parish Hall and an ecclesiastical venue, such as St Mary’s Twyford or St Cross Chapel ... Our second concert is given with other local choirs as part of the Winchester and County Music Festival.’

‘We have acquired an enviable reputation performing an extensive repertoire ranging from early music to challenging modern works. Named after William Waynflete, the fifteenth-century Bishop of Winchester, the choir was founded in 1970 to enable the performance of large-scale choral works in the city's own cathedral ... The Choir currently has some 110 singers who are drawn from many walks of life and from all over the region. Singers are admitted by audition.’

Winchester Ladies Barbershop Chorus founded in 1985: ‘Since then the chorus has grown in numbers and ability. We now have about 35 members and each year sees us rising further up the national "league table". We regularly compete in local music festivals where we have won several trophies ... Besides competing at local, national and international level, we have a busy diary of bookings for entertaining at local events. In addition, we have played an active role in the community and have entertained in local residential homes, run free vocal workshops and participated in local Charity Concerts’. ‘A lively, friendly, amateur orchestra that started as an evening class for adults wanting to experience playing in an orchestra ... We perform two classical concerts each year and one concert specifically themed for children ... We consider ourselves to be a "learning and training" orchestra. As such, we purposely do not have a formal audition for aspiring new members. We want to give adult "learner and returner" musicians the opportunity to experience playing in an orchestra. We suggest that those who have a playing standard of Associated Board Grade 6 or above would enjoy the experience of playing in our orchestra.’

’In January of each year the choir presents a concert with professional soloists and musicians. The programme may consist of popular well known choral works as well as those performed less often. We also discover the delights of singing modern choral works ... Each May, the WCFC joins with other Hampshire-based choirs in the Winchester & County Music Festival to perform major choral works at either Romsey Abbey or Winchester Cathedral ... Please note that we do audition new singers, but it is not as scary as you think! Auditions are held for prospective members to ensure that all voices blend and that the voice parts of the choir balance to produce the quality of musical performance we can all be proud of.’

‘When William of Wykeham founded Winchester College in 1382 he made provision for 16 boys called Quiristers to sing the Chapel services. The school has maintained its mediaeval choral foundation for more than 600 years and today this lies at the heart of a flourishing choral tradition, noted for its excellence and diversity ... The Quiristers also sing as a boys' choir in their own right and give regular concerts for local charities as well as broadcasts for radio and television.'

‘One of Hampshire’s longest established choral groups with about 100 members and an associated orchestra. An independent charity run by its members, the choir benefits greatly from a close association with Winchester College ... The choir not only enjoys first class facilities for rehearsal, but also the support of other music staff of the college to facilitate sectional practise sessions for the various voice groups.‘

‘Started as a Hampshire County Council evening class in 1951 ... During the troubled times of the early 1970's, the Orchestra, by now a thriving concern, was destined to be axed by Hampshire County Council as an evening class, due to the electricity cuts. The members were reluctant to give in so easily, so when Winchester College offered us the Music School facilities to rehearse in, they were gratefully accepted. These events precipitated the move to complete independence from the County Council, and the orchestra became a registered charity in 1984.‘ In recent years, the Orchestra has organized a Winchester Young Soloist Competition ‘open to all young people of school age in the Winchester area’.

‘Life at the Cathedral is anchored in a centuries-old pattern of daily worship, often enriched by glorious choral music, and the great seasonal festivals of the church year. We also work with our local communities and parishes, as well as national and international partners and networks. Our aim is to make this great Cathedral a special place where everyone can, in their own chosen way, feel the beauty of holiness ... The core of our present-day Organ dates from the mid 19th century, and was built by the master organ maker “Father” Henry Willis. His firm, Henry Willis & Sons Ltd, also built organs for many other cathedrals including Durham, Hereford, St Paul’s and Salisbury. It’s still in business today.’

‘Music is inherent to the life of our school, giving boys skills and experiences that last them for the rest of their lives. Our aim is to enable every boy to experience the best and widest range of music-making, whether as a performer or listener ... Beyond music as a curriculum subject, we encourage extra-extracurricular participation for every boy who is interested and able. Two thirds of the boys learn an instrument, while many learn two or three. From the Glee Club to the Quiristers, and with a lively calendar of concerts and performances, we cater for the widest possible range of tastes, expectations and experience.’
