'The Festival provides a platform for amateur performances with an educational element provided by professional adjudicators. Our Vision is to encourage and provide a conduit through public performances for young children to express themselves through music, speech and drama and to showcase and nurture this talent in the performing arts. We still believe in the ideal that the youth of today are talented in the arts and will always have something to offer. This talent is in all of us, and if, as a Society, we can nurture even a small amount of that talent, then we are making a difference. It is this difference that keeps us working so hard to make the Festival what it is.' Held Early May.

‘Following extended discussion, Lancashire Contests have opted to amalgamate three contests and focus efforts into further development of a single contest. The annual Fleetwood Open, and Northern Open Contests will not be staged for the foreseeable future. Scarce financial support and sponsorship together with the increasing cost of suitable venues has made it difficult to secure the long-term viability of three separate contests. Decreasing numbers of bands participating in these contests adversely affects sustainable budgeting. The lack of volunteers to assist with the organisation of the events is an unjustifiable burden upon the small group of long-standing individuals who have for many years, given their time and work freely to continue the tradition of band contests in the North West.‘

There are many choirs located across the North West region alone, ranging in size from small harmony ensembles to full-scale, semi-professional choirs such as the Halle. There also exist many local music festivals in which there is sometimes a choral element. However, with the exception of the (national) bi-annual BBC 'Choir of the Year' competition, there aren't many local or regional competitions for amateur choirs. The Manchester Amateur Choral Competition seeks to readdress this imbalance by establishing an annual competition in which choirs from across and beyond the region are invited to compete in a spirit of creativity and community.' ‘One of the leading chamber choirs in the north west of England ... We perform 5-6 concerts per year, including both sacred and secular repertoire. Our concerts can be light and include songs from shows, or can consist of a single piece ... Franz Xaver Brixi was an 18th century Czech composer and his “Veni Sancte Spiritus” was the first choral work sung by a group of dedicated musicians from the Bolton area eager to form a chamber choir back in May 1994 ...The Brixi Singers are limited by their Constitution to 25 singers.’

'During World War Two, brass bands in the Burnley area lacked support. But with the help of Colonel Parkinson with instruments and musicians from local bands, they formed the Burnley Home Guard Band. The Band continued after the war, and because the band was formed from an alliance of many bands, in 1951 its name was changed to the Burnley Alliance Silver Band.  The Band is totally self supporting, and presently has 25 regular players ... The band is happy to welcome new players & take bookings.'

‘Founded in 1982 as the Debrose Choir. In 2009, we changed our name to Cantare. The choir includes women of all ages and from all walks of life – no superstars, just people who love to sing and who want to do it well. Our repertoire is exciting and wide ranging, from pop standards and songs from the shows, to classical and contemporary choral pieces. We enjoy a challenge, strive to make a great sound and have a brilliant time whilst we’re doing it. We perform regularly at concerts and other events throughout the year.‘
