‘Music has played a foremost role in the life of Balliol College, Oxford for the past two centuries. Benjamin Jowett, one of the most well-known Masters of the College, invited John Farmer, music master of Harrow School, to become Director of Music at Balliol; and in 1885 Farmer created a series of concerts on alternate Sunday evenings, which are still held today in an almost unchanged fashion. Both Jowett and Farmer shared the firm belief that music should be for the many rather than the few; this idea remains the essence of the Sunday Concerts. Balliol’s Sunday Concerts were the first secular Sunday concerts in England ... All concerts are free and open to everyone.‘

‘The Association concentrates on the area administered by West Berkshire Council from Tilehurst in the east to Hungerford and Lambourn in the west. Within this area there are some fine examples of the organ builder's craft, and although the Association is centred on Newbury, visits are made and events organised in the surrounding towns and villages. People join the Association for a variety of reasons. Some are expert players who desire to share their knowledge and experience with others and welcome the opportunity to give lunchtime and evening recitals. Others are amateurs or beginners who want to learn more. Others still are non-players but nevertheless fascinated by the organ in all its shapes and forms, the music written for it, and the venues at which organs are found, whilst some enjoy the social side where the talk is musical and the discussion lively.’

Founded 1966: ‘You do not have to be an organist or choir director to belong to the NHOA. Anyone who loves the organ and its music, whether a player or not, is welcome to join. NHOA arranges visits to interesting organs in our area and has biennial visits elsewhere in the UK. And there are social and educational events including “NHOA’s Ark” where small groups get together to play in an informal environment (normally one another’s homes) and discuss problems and solutions in a friendly way ... We are keen to support young people who are interested in the organ: to that extent we have a special fund that can help with bursaries and in other ways’.

‘Founded by volunteers in 2010, Opera Prelude presents critically acclaimed and exciting lecture recitals, workshops, masterclasses, concerts and rare or rediscovered operas in historic and prestigious locations in London and Oxfordshire. A small charity, passionate about bringing opera to new audiences, our events form a bridge across the footlights, introducing you to our young singers and their wonderful, enriching world. We aim to support the early career development of young artists, showcasing their talents and advocating for them, whilst advancing the understanding and accessibility of opera. We believe that opera is for everyone, whether seasoned aficionados or absolute newcomers, and our mission is to open access to this thrilling art form.’

‘ODOA welcomes everyone interested in pipe organs - organists, builders and listeners - so they can meet to enjoy all aspects of playing, music and building. Most, but not all of our members are players - some just have a keen interest in organs and organ music. Of our playing membership, some are professionals, but more are of moderate competence, always aiming to be just that bit better. Still others are relatively unskilled but pressed into organ playing by churches having no access to a trained organist. All are equally welcome in this very friendly mutually supportive group of like-minded people.’
