‘Established in 1993 to provide an opportunity for girls and boys aged six to eleven to enjoy music making away from a school environment and to perform different styles of singing in a variety of venues. At least a dozen schools are usually represented. The Youth Voices began in 2004 for the 11+ age group. It gives a continuing role for older children and gives extra scope and a wider range of music for us all to enjoy.'

Founded in 1994 in Bishop’s Stortford: ‘Cantate is divided into three distinct groups which perform on their own and in combination with the other groups. Each choir performs at least one concert a term and sometimes more, depending on the demands of the season. Most rehearsals take place on Sundays during the school term, though occasionally there are Saturday and mid-week rehearsals ahead of performances ... The Senior Choir is often asked to perform on a national stage, and is a partner choir for Gabrieli ROAR – a training scheme run for some of the finest youth choirs in the UK.’

Formed 2001: ‘Codetta is an internationally acclaimed chamber choir based in Derry, N. Ireland ... From an initial group of two choirs, the scheme has now expanded to cater for over 200 choristers performing in a variety of ensembles: Primary Girls, Junior Girls, Boys, Youth and Codetta. Codetta’s members are all originally from Derry but now live, work and study in towns and cities throughout Ireland, the UK and Europe. The wide-ranging repertoire that the choir performs is prepared at intensive weekend rehearsals held monthly throughout the year’.

‘Established in January 2001, as part of a major new initiative to boost singing in Cornish Primary Schools ... The choir stems from a partnership between Truro Cathedral and the Cornwall Music Service Department and comprises children from all over Cornwall. The project came about following a radical decision to use the musical resources of the Cathedral, in the form of its choristers, to help bring singing back into the community’s primary schools. The Junior Choir was then set up to give those youngsters wanting to take their singing further a vehicle to enable them to do so.‘

‘We are open to boys and girls from Primary 2 to 7 and Secondary 1-6. ‘FCMG was founded in 1958 to give the first amateur performance of Benjamin Britten’s Noye’s Fludde, and for most of its life has been the most celebrated children’s choir of its kind in the UK. Since its formation it has pursued an ongoing commitment to the commissioning of new music for children’s voices ... FCMG is regularly invited to supply the children’s chorus for major choral works ... New members are always welcome to join FCMG. There are four different choirs and the age range of the children is from four to eighteen. The Beginners and Intermediates choirs are open to all. In order to enter into the Senior and Chamber choirs, it is necessary to audition. Children may join FCMG at any time – it is not essential to have passed through the early stages of FCMG in order to audition for the Senior Choir.’

Originally formed as a result of the UK Government’s national “Sing Up” program - which ran for four years from 2007. King’s College ‘helped to bring quality singing to school children across the local community, culminating in concerts at their world famous chapel. Twenty-five Cambridgeshire primary schools took part, and King’s Junior Voices was formed ... We are a free, non-auditioned Saturday morning choir for Cambridge children aged 7-13, which meets from 10.30am-12.00 in King’s College School Hall ... Older members of the choir can stay on until they are 16 in our extension group “The Robins” which stays on for an additional forty-five minutes each Saturday. ‘Began in 2007 with support from Comhairle nan Eilean Siar. It is one of a growing network of NYCoS Area Choirs across Scotland ... NYCoS Isle of Lewis Choir recruits annually from Primary 3 and 4 in the Western Isles area. Our free half-hour workshops are a fun and informal way to try out singing and games with others (where possible, with children from the same school). The Voice Squad came into being in 1992, when 10 little girls crammed themselves into the lounge of Birgitta’s terraced house, and sang for half an hour on Saturdays. The sweetshop on the corner was a major incentive, and the gigs and Festival successes began immediately. As the troupes spilled out of the back door, new premises were found, and small boys initiated into the growing forces. Today there are 3 Squads, each with around 40 members, embracing young singers aged 4-20+. The cross-section of repertoire is huge, catering for all tastes and stretching the singers to pull off entertainment in a style unique to Voice Squad which has had audiences expanding to fill sell-out gigs.’

‘In 1999 the Ulster Youth Choir was established with a view to running an annual summer residential course and concert tour for Northern Ireland’s best young singers. Since its humble beginnings ... UYC established an annual summer courses and subsequent concerts throughout Northern Ireland and further afield.
